It has launched and is running several projects bringing its staff and business advisers into contact with new sets of actual and potential entrepreneurs. In total, AFFORD-SL is currently in contact with about 500 entrepreneurs/SMEs across Sierra Leone. These local businesses and people shall be involved in ABC.

What are you trying to achieve?

GROWTH: An expected outcome achievement is that entrepreneurs and enterprises that access the ABC services shall experience business growth within 18 months of receipt of service, through increase in turnover and/or increase in number of paid employees.

DIASPORA INVESTMENT: An expected outcome achievement is that through the ABC project, African Diaspora entrepreneurs and enterprises will make business investments in Sierra Leone in the initial 3-years.

NEW JOBS: An expected outcome achievement is that 350 new jobs will be created during the initial 3-years.

Why have you created the ABC?

The overall aim of the ABC project is to improve the lives of unemployed people and those on low (poverty) wages, by facilitating their employment through SME ventures or self-employment through SME sub-contracts. The project is interested in the creation and nurturing of aspirational SMEs which create long-term jobs that provide good livelihoods to employees. This means that through the dignity of work, disadvantaged people are able to support themselves and their families.

Structured/independent Business Development Service (BDS) for SMEs is new in SL. AFFORD has established itself as one of the sector leaders. ABC is the first comprehensive/integrated package that can be a game-changer in the sector. Creation of a physical-hub with diverse services enables AFFORD to bring together support on all ‘factors of production’ (land/labour/capital/entrepreneurship) in unique package. Based on basic market principles, financial success of ABC will lead to replication/competition – for the public benefit. AFFORD as catalyst for change will continue to play role in BDS, upholding/setting-up new standards of proficiency/efficacy, and creating partnerships to facilitate complementarily – when competition is not in public interest. Critical actors in this change-process include: Government-departments/banks/finance-houses/corporations etc who bring their services at the ABC hub; ABC direct clients who use the integrated services; Media/public-relations/advocacy partners who influence stakeholder perceptions.
